Amusingly enough, Vipul Shah's keenly awaited mega release found its title from the back of a truck!

Laughs Akshay Kumar, "When I was driving back from Jaipur there was a Sardarji's truck in front of our car. At the back of the truck were the words, Singh is King. I absolutely loved the phrase and it went well with the theme of our film. I rang Vipul immediately and told him that I'd found him a brilliant title!"

In the same breath, Kumar adds, "Despite the title, the film is not about any specific community. Through the Sikh character I play in the film (Happy Singh) we're trying to convey that anyone with a positive attitude in life can be a king. It's all about attitude, spirit and self-esteem!"

Singh Is Kinng is out worldwide on August 8 with previews in select locations on August 7. It is an Indian Films-Studio 18 release.

Action king Akshay kumar has now an official status and also got a solid platform to show his concern for the nature.

The B-Town star has been chosen as the brand ambassador of the Green Global Foundation started by the International Indian Film Academy to highlight the issue of global warming through the events that the organization hosts and through other possible means.

The Green Global Foundation was launched this year by IIFA as a way of showing solidarity with the different organizations who are fighting against global warming and also to contribute in its own ways to tackle the issue.

The foundation is a joint initiative between IIFA and Wizcraft International Entertainment.

The using of the green carpet during this year's stars reception at the IIFA weekend in Bangkok was a way of showing Bollywood's concern over the issue of the rapid climate change that has become a world wide phenomenon.

The foundation has got a reliable and perfect partner for the cause it is fighting for in the United Nations Environmental Programe and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) headed by the Nobel laureate R.K. Pachauri.

By deciding to make a documentary film on Tigers in India, John Abraham has shown how it is possible to use star status and resource to do something worth for the nature.

Akshay Kumar with his wide appeal can do much more to increase the awareness on protecting the nature.

A blood red Mercedes convertible racily advances through Ladakh's dusty terrain, the car radio nervously shuffles between AC/DC's Highway to Hell and Mukesh's rendition of Kabhi Kabhie.

That, my readers, is a pretty solid indication of what's in store in the following 17 reels -- a crazy fusion of everything desi and phoren -- style, soul and lingo. Welcome to debutant director Vijay Krishna Acharya's land of the English-challenged fashionably quirky, where Tashan is your passport to every conceivable absurdity and You-got-to-be-kidding brand of illogical twists step on your toes at every opportunity.

Then again, both the soundtrack and its promos, never really made any bones to hide that. Like, who expects meaningful cinema from a movie which parades its leading actors in outrageous blonde wigs, flashy attires; and on top of it, makes them do a power-packed jig, in the middle of nowhere, along with hundred other colourful extras?

And so Tashan is *exactly* what it looks like -- a silly spectacle which goes all out to entertain. Right from its sleek black & white graphic novel-inspired opening credits to fire-breathing gun-pipes charged at the villain or cycle-rickshaw chases in the dingy lanes of Kanpur, everything is ostensibly over-the-top.

Acharya's love for the implausible, previously demonstrated in scripts like Dhoom, Dhoom 2 [Images], might not appeal to the stubbornly sensible, but those looking for a harmless VFM outing, this is, what the heck, f-u-n!

Here's a sneak peek: a call-centre employee cum English-accent trainer, Jimmy Cliff (Saif Ali Khan) is a lusty loverboy with three broken relationships to his credit. Enter fourth, namely Pooja (Kareena Kapoor). One look at the vision-in-emerald, drenched from head to toe, is enough to send Jimmy's fantasy-driven hormones in a tizzy

Jimmy-Pooja aside, yes, Saif and Kareena do share that extra-something in their chemistry. Frankly, it was evident in LoC-Kargil too. Only people were too busy counting the number of stars in its cast to notice. Thankfully, their off-screen togetherness doesn't overwhelm any of Tashan's proceedings.

Pooja works for Bhaiyyaji (Anil Kapoor [Images]), a wannabe yuppie gangster, flanked by two roly-poly sidekicks (Manoj Pahwa, Sanjay Mishra) who hires Jimmy or 'Gaarge Bhoos' to teach him English. What follows is a Bhaiyyaji's 'hingliarious' version of Amitabh Bachchan's [Images] iconic 'Khush toh bahut honge aaj' scene in Deewar.

The over familiarity of this gimmick begins to seep in. And the mind begins to wander -- a complete no-no for any masala potboiler. Forty minutes in the film and still no sign of Akshay Kumar [Images], I mumble, somewhat impatiently, while taking a long glance at my watch. Take the name of the daredevil, and there he arrives, as Bachchan Pandey in all his 10-headed glory, dressed as Ravana, vroooming in an Enfield, making an entry worthy of the film's title. Bottom-line, no soon has the paisa vasool factor come in, the cribbing takes a backseat.

A multi-crore betrayal throws Bachchan, Jimmy and Pooja together in a scenario involving extensive traveling throughout the country, even as Bhaiyyaji keeps track of their trail. I won't reveal anymore. The story, even though it makes little sense, is better enjoyed than told.

What I will tell you is that Tashan moodily swings from the dark alleys of Bhaiyya's savaging and often double-meaning humour to crass exchanges between Bachchan and Pooja to characteristically 'Saif' moments every time he candidly talks to the camera.

While this inconsistency could be avoided, Tashan, still, enjoys a smooth first half. Post-interval, as is the story of many so-far-so-good capers, the momentum slacks considerably. Thanks to Bachchan's unnecessary and lengthy childhood flashback episode and two elaborate Vishal-Shekhar songs -- Falak and Dance marein, which the film could easily do without.
What it couldn't do without is the cast. It's bang on. Kareena looks every bit of a deceiving goddess, whether she walks out of the Greek waters in a lime green bikini (oh yes, it's not just buzz) or gazes seductively into Saif/Akshay's eyes. She plays the temptress with an elegant, subdued air, which makes everything she says (lingerie talk) or wears (strictly skimpy) appear tasteful.

Saif Ali Khan plays Jimmy with tremendous generosity allowing the more gregarious section of the cast take centrestage while he ably lends support. Apart from the double-barrel moustache and frumpy pants, there's nothing outlandish about his character, he's just a cool guy in an uncool situation. And Saif invented cool.

Any other actor in Anil Kapoor's place would have hammed like mad in a role that spells g-a-u-d-y. Kapoor, however, conveys the English-obsessed temperament of his character with such utter seriousness, you really don't want to argue. Also, the man plays evil with equal relish.

Saving best for the last, Akshay steals the show. It's not like he excels only in scenes centred around his earthy cockiness or charm. Even when he's just excitedly showing off his pearlies to acknowledge Bhaiyyaji or cuddling up to a sheep in the back of a truck or turning red in an attempt to profess love to his childhood sweetheart, Akshay shines. Now, if he only weren't made to scratch his you-know-what in every reel.

The Three Musketeers of this flamboyant enterprise are definitely its cinematography, action and background score. Ayananka Bose's imaginative combination of great lighting, perfect compositions, adventurous angles and penchant for flawless close-ups is truly commendable. Under Peter Hein's deft action, Akshay transforms into a charged gorilla, leaping from one wall to another in a matter of seconds. The fast-paced stunts involving all the stars, even when a bit ludicrous --like uniformly clad martial art fighters popping out from nowhere, are likely to excite any action buff. Ranjit Barot brings out the attitude of Tashan through zingy, high-voltage beats, even find a slot to merge a high-pitched Chandi mantra during the climax, true blue Bollywood style.

Ultimately, it's a lavishly-told fairy tale of three con-men, which emphasises on swagger not purpose and settles for style over substance. But if you aren't looking for the latter, Tashan is all-revelry.

Trust Akshay Kumar to do the unthinkable. The Khiladi star reportedly did a Houdini when he pulled off an underwater action sequence which required him to be in chains for Nagesh Kukunoor's forthcoming film, 8 X 10. The actor underwent a special training course at Bangkok for the same. Meanwhile, we hear that Nagesh is impressed by Akshay's track record at the Box Office. As a result the filmmaker is quite gung ho about his film. "It is a supernatural film but more on the psychic side. Akshay has this unique ability in the film to see the future and the whole film unfolds through him," Nagesh says. The film also has Ayesha Takia playing Akshay's love interest with Sharmila Tagore in a supporting role. The movie which is almost completed was shot mostly in Canada

Vipul Shah is gradually spreading his wings. An accomplished director himself, Shah surprised everyone when he entrusted the directorial reins of his new film, SINGH IS KINNG, to Anees Bazmee. This was much before WELCOME happened to Anees and Akshay Kumar together.

Now Shah has gone ahead and signed David Dhawan to direct his forthcoming venture. “Both Anees and David are in the same league, in the top bracket. After making a film with Anees, you ought to remain in the same bracket,” the soft-spoken producer informs me.

Will it star Shah's fav hero Akshay Kumar in the lead? “It's too early to comment on it. Actually, it all depends on the script. The moment we lock on the script, we'll look into that aspect,” he clarifies. Indeed, Shah is going from strength to strength!

After the smashing Bhool Bhulaiya Akshay Kumar and Bhushan Kumar team up again!!

Following the success of Bhool Bhulaiya, Akshay Kumar and Bhushan Kumar of T-series are alls et to team up again for a new project titled '8x10'. The movie stars Akshay Kumar and the glamorous Ayesha Takia. The film is being directed by proficient director Nagesh Kukunoor.

The movie is being co-produced by T-Series along with Percept Picture Company. This is the third project for which T-Series and Percept have joined hands. The other projects under these two banners are Ashayain and Kanchivaram. Kanchivaram is being directed by Mr. Priyadarshan and revolves around the theme of ideology while Aashayain is being directed by Nagesh Kukunor and stars John Abraham .

Writer-director Anees Bazmee who delivered one of the biggest hits of 2007, Welcome, is very angry and upset by the fate of his film in Pakistam. Speaking on the subject, Anees said, "I had no clue my Welcome was to be released in Pakistan! Nobody told me anything about it…not even producer Feroz Nadiadwala. I guess once I direct and deliver a film it's no longer my intellectual or commercial property. Fair enough. But what was the harm if I was told about such a big event in my life as filmmaker?"
Not too many Indian films have been released in Pakistan. There was Akbar Khan Saab's Taj Mahal and Bhatt Saab's Awaraapan. Both had a connection with Pakistan. Says Anees, "Welcome had no relevance to people across the border except entertainment. So yes, I'd have loved to be part of its release there. It's sad that I got to know about it through my friends in Pakistan. I agree I was out of the country working on my script. But I was just a phone call away."
What hurt and offended Anees even more was that one of his main characters played by Feroz Khan has been totally obliterated in Pakistan. "I understand Feroz Khan Saab had some problems with the local authorities in Pakistan when he visited there and made some remarks they didn't like. But why should my film suffer for that? His role is very important in Welcome. He's there for nearly an hour of the film's 2-hour playing time. By cutting his track in the plot, you're reducing my film to incoherency! I find that hard to accept."
Ironically, pirated DVDs of Welcome with the ostensibly offensive portions featuring Feroz Khan flooded the Pakistani market months weeks before the film's official release in the country.
Fumes Anees, "I don't know why I wasn't taken into confidence about the release, or how the film could've been re-edited so drastically without my consent. I understand distributors have their own compulsions and demands. But my film can't be mutilated for political purposes."

The charming and suave Akshay Kumar makes an appearance in The Li'l Champs pre finale on Zee TV. The dashing superstar after having delivered 'hit pe hit' movies last year was gracious enough to spare sometime for the kids. But there's more to the story…
Along with Akshay Kumar, there was another special guest named Tejaswini on the sets. Tejaswini, a handicap who hails from Chandigarh, is 20 yrs old but has a mind of a 3 year old kid. She is a crazy Akshay Kumar fan. Akshay Kumar met her at a concert in Chandigarh and especially invited her on the sets of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li'l Champs. She sang the song 'Jiya Dhadak Dhadak' on the show.
Akshay even obliged her with a special performance on the super hit song 'Hare Ram Hare Ram' from his movie Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Now is that sweet or what…

After the success of Welcome last year, Anees Bazmee has reportedly, inked an 8 Crore deal with Studio 18, thus making him one of the highest paid directors in the industry.
Confirming the news about the whopping deal Bazmee did not divulge any details about the figures. He however informed that he would be commencing with the shoot once he wraps up with Singh Is Kinng. He further added that the script of the film will be finalized by next month and thereafter, he will zero down the star cast. Not only this, Bazmee is all set to direct three sequels to No Entry, Welcome and Phir Hera Pheri. To which Bazmee informed that he announced the sequel to Welcome before its release last year.

Yash Raj Films, Aditya Chopra, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Vishal-Shekhar, An action subject, A new director - Vijay Krishna Acharya And one catchy title - TASHAN! Now this is what you call as a project that just can't fail. All set to arrive on 25th April, the film is undoubtedly the most anticipated project of the season.
So can one say that it is about time for the film's promotion to begin?
Agreed that Yash Raj Films have traditionally reserved only around a month for promotion of their films. Also, even during this duration, the publicity is mainly low key without resorting to being on your face. But in the hindsight, when one looks at the fate of AAJA NACHLE and LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG, two major failures that Yash Raj Films had to suffer last year, it becomes quite obvious that TASHAN is a project which the production house would be banking on in a big way this year!
Keeping that under consideration, it may well be worth a thought to give the promotion of TASHAN an extra effort. After all it is not everyday that Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Anil Kapoor come together in a single frame!

There is a strong tussle going on between director Rajkumar Santoshi and producer Paramjeet Singh over Salman-starrer London Dreams – both claiming rights over the film's script. Singh is all set to start London Dreams with Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif with Vipul Shah as director. But Santoshi has now warned against making the film without his permission.

When contacted, Rajkumar Santoshi, who has written the original script, says, "How can they start shooting without taking my permission? I still hold the film's script rights as I have written it. It's okay I'm not directing it anymore but how can they go ahead like this with a whole new set-up? It will be unprofessional. I'm willing to sit down for a discussion with them."

Paramjeet Singh, the producer of the film was stunned but laughed it off, saying, "I have a contract signed by Santoshi in which it's written that he was paid to write the script and I have already paid him. I have already incurred heavy losses and don't want to delay the film further. Everything will be on paper within a few days."

Rajkumar Santoshi had written the script of London Dreams keeping Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan in mind but when they declined to star in the project together, Santoshi signed on Salman and Ajay Devgan. But the movie was shelved after one schedule. The producer is planning to revive the project with Salman and Akshay Kumar now.

PAKISTAN BOX-OFFICE

WELCOME has been welcomed with open arms in Pakistan. Released last Friday [8th February], the film has fared very well in its opening weekend, despite the fact that the pirated DVDs have been in circulation there… Meanwhile, the business has hit rock bottom in the absence of new releases in the major markets

After Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt's AWARAPAN and UTV's DHAN DHANA DHAN GOAL, WELCOME is the next recent release to open in Pakistani theatres. Here's some vital info pertaining to its opening weekend business in the neighboring country. It's a Bollywood Hungama exclusive.

Since its release on 8th February, the box-office graph of WELCOME has only gone upwards and the business is expected to zoom further next week. The elections [scheduled for 18th February] may disrupt the business a little, but the business is expected to increase again thereafter. Luckily, as there is no other film releasing, WELCOME has a few clean weeks ahead.

Abbas Mastan will be directing and producing a romantic comedy fr which they have roped in their favorite actor Akshay Kumar. The only actors who ruled the Box Office in 2007 were Akshay kumar and Shah Rukh Khan. Where SRK gave mega hits like Chak De India! And Om Shanti Om, akshay gave four back hits in the form of Namaste Lomdon, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhuliaya and Welcome. With these films akshay who was once known for his action films transformed himself into Bollywood’s First Comic superstar!

However, akhi prefers not to get slotted into a particular image for which he has signed Sajid Khan’s romantic comedy as well as Abbas Mastan’s romantic film.

Abbas Mastan who made the film Ajnabee with Akhi, also said that he will be soon launching his own production house and will produce two films out of which one is a comedy with Akshay and the other one will be an action packed.

Abbas Mastan also said that they want to offer something different to their stars and so they have offered saif the film RACE in which he will perform stunts as never before.

So one thing is for sure that Akshay is coming this year in a different get up. First he will be seen in the film TASHAN as a action hero and then he will be coming in as a comedy hero in his rest of the films.

Audio company Venus has announced several new projects, five of which will be released this year. The first is 'Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam'. Directed by Sanjay Chel, it stars Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose. The new projects will be launched with David Dhawan, Priyadarshan, Abbas-Mustan, Rahul Dholakia and Sanjay Khanduri as directors. While the David Dhawan film will star Govinda and Akshaye Khanna, the Priyadarshan film will have Akshay Kumar essaying the main lead.
